VKRadio is intended to be for its users, both sysops and regular echomail users alike. To that end, this echo is the place to post ideas that you think might enhance the net for consideration by everyone. I've tried to keep the number of echoes to a minimum, to let the net grow organically to meet the needs of all of us.

So, get your thinking caps on and let's build this net! :-)

Hello Tony, it's a pleasure to be member of your radio-circuit - thanks for your help configuring everything - at the end, it wasn't too difficult, you were right.

On next sat/sun there will be Ham Spirit event near my city, I think I'll go
to take a look to some radio-equipment to be sold.

Hopefully you'll pick up a bargain. I went to a hamfest last Sunday. No new radios, but I did pick up a router that I've configured as a wireless access point and switch, which will replace one that died a month or so ago.

    What sort of info?

VK_QSO is open topic, if it doesn't fit anywhere else, it fits there.

If it's related to obtaining a licence, you could post it in VK_STUDY.

There's going to be room somewhere to post it. :)

Another alternative is to create a VK_NEWS echo, and have that as the place for bulletins. I could also put WIA News bulletins in too. Just thinking out loud and floating different ideas. What do you think?

Yeah, that'd be a good idea. Not everyone gets FIDONet, or bulletins
    from W1AW (ARRL HQ).

There was one today about the ARRL wanting the FCC to grant expanded
HF privileges for Technician Class licensees...to hopefully entice them
to upgrade for more of the HF pie. The FCC hasn't invited comments on
such, but I don't know if it'll fly or not.

It might be just an economic ploy by the ARRL to try to get more
members. At least with my being a Life Member, I don't have to worry
about dues increases...and the only thing I do with them now is being a
license exam team leader with their Volunteer Examiner Coordinator (VEC)
    group.

I get the bulletins from W1AW via email, and download the Amateur
Radio Newsline from their website...although I split the Newsline into 4 separate posts, because of the length, and some message networks or
BBS software have a bit of a limit on the size of postings.

Yeah, I'm not keen to clutter the general echo with news bulletins, and there enough from around the world for them to have their own echo. Stay tuned (pardon the pun) for an announcement. ;)

I saw that one on DOVEnet. We did away with band segments for the most part, back in 2005. 6m is one exception, because of the lower 2 MHz being secondary to broadcasting. It's only available to Advanced hams (our highest level), and the 80m DX window is another, I think.

There were comments on a D-Star Net last night about that...it's
probably a ploy by the rig manufacturers, so they can sell more
gear...and/or the ARRL, to get more members.

The FCC hasn't invited comments on it, and I'd be surprised if it went anywhere. When I took the U.S. General Class Exam in 2007, it was right
after a Question Pool had changed (over here, they change every 4
years), and I thought the exam "was a piece of cake".

In the U.S., there are only 500 kilohertz of spectrum that the General
    Class hams can't access, in 80, 40, 20, and 15 meters...compared to what
the Amateur Extra Class hams have. But, there are only 4 real "reasons"
to upgrade to Amateur Extra in the U.S. and its territories:

    1) Full amateur radio privileges, although you have to stay 3 kilohertz
away from the band edge, so any splatter, etc. doesn't take you "out of
    band".

    2) The shorter 2x1 or 1x2 callsigns...if you're lucky enough to get one.
    I like my Novice style 2x3 call...even though it's a Vanity Callsign. I
know several Amateur Extra Class hams who have their Novice callsign,
with the only change when they upgraded to Technician. Years ago, the
Novice Class license was non-renewable, and only good for a year. You
had a year to upgrade, or you were out of amateur radio.

    3) As a Volunteer Examiner (VE), you can give and grade ALL the exams (Technician, General, and Amateur Extra)...the General Class VE's can
ONLY give the General Class exam. However, with the rules change awhile
back, a U.S. ham who has let their license lapse (expired more than 2
years) has to take the Technician License to get back into amateur
radio...and it's the General Class VE that can give it.

    4) Snob appeal (hi hi).

Well, depends what you want to do. Do you just want to access what's out there, or do you want to run a packet BBS? And what protocols do you want to use? I know of at least 4 options, 3 of which I have used in the past:

Raw AX.25 - this is the most commonly used.
ROSE - I'm not familiar with this, as ROSE was never implemented in my area. NET/ROM, another networking protocol with a RIP like broadcast mechanism for propagating routing information.
IP - Yep, good old IP(v4), the same protocol suite we use on the Internet
    oday.

Raw AX.25 as a user can be done by using a TNC and a serial terminal emulator. In this setup, the TNC will do all the hard work. :)

NET/ROM and IP require a TNC that can be put into KISS mode (most can, and there are now KISS mode TNCs, whoch only do KISS). Software wise, there's KA9Q NOS and the G8BPQ switch for DOS which does AX.25, NET/ROM and IP, BPQ32 for Windows, which can talk to the Windows IP stack. Linux has a few options. You can go down the LinBPQ route, which uses LinBPQ to do AX.25 and NET/ROM, and also bridges IP to packet. Or you can use the Linux kernel support, which has AX.25, ROSE, NET/ROM and of course, the native IP (v4 and v6) stack. And another option is to use JNOS (Linux port of NOS) for the packet side.

I'm (very) slowly getting packet back up. I have a R-Pi with a TNC-Pi running LinBPQ. It all works, just have to hook it up to a radio. :) My setup is a bit more complicated, because I've separated the IPIP tunneling (to communicate with other ham packet nodes) from the actual packet node. That was mainly because I didn't do them at the same time, I did the IPIP tunneling first, and that has been fully operational for a while. You can reach me on the ham IP network, if you're on the network anywhere in the world. :)
