Hello Digital Man,
I have a couple users here in net153 writing in a russian language, latvian I think using CHRS CP866. They are not able to read those messages on the news server because the news server (here, on the BBS) says charset=CP437.
They can read those CP866 messages on other news servers because the news server says..
Content-Type: text/plain; charset=koi8-r; format=fixed
Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit
So I wonder if it is desirable/possible/doable to change the news server to use a charset like that for CP866 messages.
Below is a bit of an excahnge I had with one of these folks.. just FYI.

As far as I know the CHRS in FTN is good, but it's reading
messages on the news server that fails. Am I right?
Correct.
X-FTN-AREA: NET153
X-FTN-MSGID: 1:153/7001 6044f849 <==== MSGID
X-FTN-REPLY: 1:153/757.1315 445e8a85
X-FTN-CHRS: CP866 2 <==== FINE and DANDY!
X-FTN-SEEN-BY: 153/105 141 250 757 802 6809 7001 7715
X-FTN-PATH: 153/7001 757
Content-Type: text/plain; charset=IBM437 <==== OOOPS!
Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit
So.. should that say charset=IBM866?
If the CP866 message contains 8bit, then the nntp result should
be:
Content-Type: text/plain; charset=koi8-r; format=fixed
Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit
