• Release cycle?

From acn@acn@IMZADI.remove-msd-this to All on Tue Feb 23 15:21:57 2021
    From Newsgroup: alt.bbs.synchronet

    Hi,

my current setup is the first version of Synchronet that I'm using.
I've installed the latest stable release (3.18b) from the git repository.

But as I'm watching the echos here, there is quite some development going on and also the documentation wiki evolves, but (naturally) documents the latest versions of the modules instead of the latest "stable" version.

    So my question is:
How often are new stable releases coming out normally?
Or: Is it predictable when the next release will be ready?

    Thank you very much!

    Regards,
    Anna

Not very often. The developers could answer better but I am not sure.

I have always kept up to date with the current version, the master branch.

That means the BBS goes down for 5 or 10 minutes while I "git pull" and "make symlinks setcap" once or twice a week.

It's not a bad thing to install a stable version and wait for the next but I always want to see these new developments as they appear. :)

There's no fixed schedule, but you can see the history of releases here: https://wiki.synchro.net/history:versions

Or: Is it predictable when the next release will be ready?

Lately it's been about one release a year and I do expect that v3.19 will be "released" this year, some time after it hits the master branch in git and has extensive testing.

Well, 3.18b was pretty recent, 3.17b was January 2019,
and 3.15c was August 2015... so every few years or so.

I was thinkin... you could release like Oracle does ... Synchronet v3.21 (because it is the year 2021). Next year, Synchronet v3.22. And you could even get darker ... Synchronet v3.21.2.23 (you know, February 23, 2021 release).

    Okay, I'm done.

Can the "master" branch be considered somewhat stable and ready for testing or is it more like a "dev" branch?

It's a dev branch for sure (bugs are often committed, but usually quickly fixed).

Hopefully you didn't encounter the broken nightly yesterday... I force
pushed a different nightly-20210227 and re-ran for nightly and nightly-20210228 about an hour ago... both are working now... I also
    removed
some of the in between tags that may have had a couple issues.

If you're running "latest", you'll want to copy the latest ecweb or
runemaster web directories (see backup/default/web-runemaster) into the
./web directory. By default it copies ecweb4, but that isn't in the
1.1b repo so it doesn't get installed.

    I added x00 download/install into xtrn/dosutils as well as
added/configured node and deno (other JS runtimes) to store/cache data
in xtrn/.cache, _deno and _node respectively. Not used by default but available...

My next change will be to also add xtrn/bin to the path so that external executables (linux) can be placed there. After that, going to work on
getting an easier to access shell sbbs-dosemu or something as a command
to get drive mounts that match what a door uses, so configuration apps
    can be accessed/used more easily.

If you want to use nightly, might pin (see docker-compose.yml) the image
to :nightly-20210228 for now, unless/until you're ready to
    change/upgrade again.
