Good day!
I noticed when recycling SBBS, I've noticed the following error message in the syslog output:
term 0008 !ERROR 98 binding Telnet Server socket to port 23: Address already in use
erm 0008 !ERROR 13 binding Telnet Server socket to port 23: Permission denied
This is on the latest Git build of SBBS for Linux.
Condition: systemctl restart sbbs - Above error occurs.
Condition: systemctl stop sbbs - Above error does not occur.
Linux kernel is 4.14.209-160.335.amzn2.x86_64. This is an EC2 instance on AWS.
I'm definitely open to suggestions.

Looks like the usual *nix TCP socket rebind issues: http://wiki.synchro.net/faq:tcpip#bindYeah, was reading this and thought immediately that REUSEADDR=1 needs to be in sockopts.ini

Howdy,
Looks like the usual *nix TCP socket rebind issues: http://wiki.synchro.net/faq:tcpip#bindYeah, was reading this and thought immediately that REUSEADDR=1 needs to be in sockopts.ini
Should REUSEADDR be defaulted for new installs? I'm curious why it isnt (and I see many fall for this and ask about it, as I did when I first started with SBBS)...

The wiki refers to adding to the root section. Do I add [root] to the sbbs.ini file?

Welcome back!
First of all, thank you. This has been a hectic year for my family and I. With Covid and my health, I had to "kill" one of my hobbies. Now that things are quieting down, hobby is back. :)

With me, tweaking my BBS is a nice escape from hectic reality. :)

My daily life involves dealing with *nix-based operating systems. When I come home (okay, when I move from my desk to the couch), the last thing I want to do is get onto the computer. Right now, thing are slow, nothing on television, I might actually be able to get my damn BBS fully up and running--again.
Reality? That's scary!

That sounds eerlily similar to myself at this point... I've started to
find some motivation in my down time to start working on things again,
but it's a hard build up. I work on software development at work and
don't often have the motivation to work on my own projects (including
the BBS) when I do have down time.
I have about half a dozen projects (3 bbs related) that I'm in various stages of. So I'll have a couple days of starts and stops now and
then... frankly, I need some away time badly.

Haha, yeah, no. I've been Dream Master since 1989. Originally stuck as dreamastr on systems that only supported 9 character handles / usernames. Rob (digital man) can easily vouch for me on this one. Hell, I traded an unlimited licensed copy that I purchased of Wildcat! for Synchronet (250 node count, if I recall) back in 1991 or 1992. It was the best decision I ever made.

no idea what that means. I've managed people, managed systems, hell, I barely manage myself.

I think I just found my new LinkedIn profile description!

Right now I am trying to get my system up and running. As I
recently discovered that SRE/BRE doesn't like 64-bit environments
and dosemu is worthless for them, I'm now spending my time
re-learning all the fun stuff I tossed away in my head some years
ago. :|

Anyway, Mr. MRO, I think you and I had this same conversation about a year ago when there was another Dream Master or similar that was on DOVE-Net. Trust me, I'm not changing.
There is a Dream Master who runs Dreamland BBS and DoREnet FTN. http://dreamlandbbs.org
Not sure whether you mean "Windows" or "Linux" when referring to
64-bit environments, but BRE runs fine here with DOSemu on 64-bit
Linux.
i'm already mro. i am not mr. mro

I'm actually working on that right now. I attempted it on one of my Windows Server 2019 boxes and it blew chunks.

I think the name "mro" is supposed to be "Mr. O", but as a single word without punctuation or anything, the name "mro" can be a bit ambiguous whether it's supposed to be "Mr. O" or a single word pronounced "murrow" or something.
Assuming that's a 64-bit edition of Windows, that would be true for all 16-bit DOS programs then.
Of course there is this, but I haven't tried it yet: http://www.columbia.edu/~em36/ntvdmx64.html

I knew what I was getting myself into and was hopeful our friends
that made BRE/SRE would've done some positive porition. Instead,
I'll be dicking with dosemu tomorrow. Yay me!
Here's a good place to start:
