neither... it is the hex for the character in the 14th position of CP437 or whatever default character set your system is using... take a look at that wikipedia ASCII chart you were linked to earlier... it would be the decimal 14 character...

That's how it works for the mail server (the "NewMailNotice" key in the [mail] section of sbbs.ini) - but here are the reasons I'd consider using the text.dat instead:
- the .ini syntax is different enough from the text.dat to be a challenge
- the other/similar strings are already in the text.dat
- the mail server already loads the text.dat (though it doesn't directly use its strings, they're available for use in JS external mail processors)
And having SBBSecho read/use the text.dat would actually be a pretty trivial change. But yes, the user-visible strings in SBBSecho should be configurable... somewhere.

When I edited my text.dat file before every time it would screw up unless I just replaced colours then it worked fine. I sometimes changed the spacing, made the line numbers closer, tried erasing line numbers, no dice. What is the proper way of editing the file without screw ups?

Yes.
The only confusion is when the Ctrl-A code is a number (for background colors), in which case you must use \x01 instead of \1.

When I coloured the line 545 in text.dat, it had no effect on colour changes. But when I coloured the line in logonlist.js then it changed.

Isn't a .js file typically JavaScript? Wouldn't that just place MORE syntax restictions/requirements to the file?
The text.dat file has a specific format that is quite simple, and if you pull all the color codes out of it, it's actually quite legible.
So.. which might you consider to be more prone to screw ups: Editing text.dat or trying to create new menus and screens using Ctrl-A color codes and @ variables? I tend to do heavy editing in the menu, if there is an error it's less likely to take the system down like a corrupt text.dat might do.
But I get it... text.dat colors, if they don't match the color theme you desire, will require some editing.

But it’s not the editing that is screwing up, It’s when it executes the bbs. My text.dat is a very basic coding process similar to the dos bbs days. Color where needed in the file, but that’s about it actually.

I don't think there's a good reason to have a limit. I think customizability is a good thing. The more lines in text.dat, the more customizable Synchronet is.

Hi DM. Any major or minor changes to the structure of text.dat in the future or will it stay the same as it is now?

The "structure" (format) of the text.dat hasn't changed in 25+ years, so probably not going to change, no. The *contents* are very likely to continue to change.

No, I mean the structure. The contents (the strings themselves) are very likely to continue to change. I try to make my changes backward compatible (e.g. adding new strings to the end), but I sometimes reuse deprecated strings or make non-backwards-compatible changes out of convenience or perceived necessity.
