I've recently bought a new TV and it's an OLED one... did some research and it seems they are better at rendering the colour black on screen compared to QLED tech. But I think the risk of burn-in with OLED is greater, or so I am led to believe.

Anyone had fun with going down the tech rabbit hole with TV's?

It had been 16+ years since I last bought a telly.

..and don't get me started on HDMI now :)

Not much lately. I bought a secondary TV a few years ago, but I just wanted to buy something that was 4K and didn't cost a lot. My main TV is a 55" Samsung that I bought in 2015 - I still use it because it supports 3D, and I've heard they don't make 3D-capable TVs anymore. One thing about it though is that sometimes the image on it gets dark for some reason. I can adjust the brightness back up higher, so I know it's still capable, but for whatever reason, lately it seems to sometimes see fit to auto-adjust the brightness sometimes to make it dark.

Honestly I don't watch 3D content very often, but I'd be sad to have to replace that TV, which will probably happen eventually.

I've not heard of burn-in risk, but OLED was a thing with phone screens
back in the 2000s, and are coming back. The new Moto phones have OLED
and comparing them to my phone shows a significant difference.

OLED blacks are really nice and contrasty, it makes the colors pop.

interesting, yes the one we were using was bought in 2008 a Samsung also and mostly working OK, 40 inch screen but issues with the back light starting to cause problems.

I've never experienced 3D telly but recall thinking it may be a bit gimmicky at the time.

I agree, this seems to be the main difference as far as I can tell, that and they (sadly) cost more :(

I've heard people say it seems gimmicky. I suppose that's sort of true, but I think it's pretty cool to be able to watch something in 3D. I figure we see in 3D naturally, and being able to watch 3D content on TV adds that bit of depth. I also think it's interesting that it's possible to add details to convert a 2D move to 3D.. That's something I initially wouldn't have considered to be possible. I have Titanic (1997) on 3D blu-ray, and I think that's something that was pretty cool to watch.

I had friend who had Avatar on 3D, with a huge TV, it was OK - but 3D
glasses over regular glasses is a bit wonky. They moved and never
bothered unpacking their big TV.

There have been several 3D movies I've seen over the years that were just alright, but then I saw Dr. Strange in 3D. Holy smokes, that movie was very much made for it and all the effects are that much better in 3D. Definitely would recommend watching it like that. I'm looking forward to seeing the
second one in 3D as well some day. The first one I even just watched using a Cardboard viewer, so it was half the resolution. Still amazing.
