From paulie420@21:2/150 to All on Sun Jan 28 17:18:14 2024
PiMiga 4, from Chris Edwards, was just released today... we usually get a new PiMiga right @ Christmas but this one is particularly special b/c it's not ONLINE for Raspberry Pi's this time - PiMiga 4 can run on an RPi 4 OR x86 machines; intel, amd, arm... all of em!

PiMiga 4 is a collection of Amiga software, tools, games, demos and MORE that runs on top of Amiberry and ScalOS (A modern Amiga compatible OS). A bonus of that is that it emulates Amiga, Apple, Atari and other retro machines perfectly - it will run any of your Amiga software with ease - and it comes jam packed w/ Amiga stuff if you DON'T have software.

    All you have to bring is;
    Raspberry Pi 4/400
    (or an x86 machine)
    64GB+ SDCard
(or USBStick & HDD on machine)
    PIMIGA4.IMG
Amiga kickstarts ($1.99 from Clamato Android app, $20 from Amiga Forever)

Okok, yer in??? Watch Chris' PiMiga 4 release YouTube video: https://youtu.be/z8NB9-NZ9-c?si=qqrF1uFKEi1bHBPs

In the comments, you'll find a PIMIGA4.torrent file - and it will let you download the 35GB PIMIGA.IMG used to burn to an SDCard/USB Stick...

You can also head to 2oFB and search for "PiMiga_4.zip" and get *everything* you need... :P

I'm throwing it on both a Raspberry Pi 4 and an old x86 Mac Mini and I'll release my fun on YT at a later date - if yer into retro machines and want to have a GREAT Amiga collection very easily, COME GET S0ME!

    That sounds pretty cool. :)

    How is the stability?

    How is the stability?

... so - it's good. The emulation can get caught up after running MANY demos or games without a reboot - but this is much like you'd find on real hardware in MY experience... the cool thing is since it's just running on top on Amiberry you can always press F10 to attempt to kill whats running, or F12 to exit to Amiberry and reboot within 5 seconds - its super fast and once booted again ANYTHING will run.

That being said, if yer not just running demo after demo, or game after game, the stability is better... if yer using it for word processing, terminal software, music software etc. it IS really stable.

It's highly suggested - sure, some Amiga hardcores won't like the emulation layer, BUT it allows cool things like [current] firefox passthru, allowing you to DO MORE than you can on true hardware...

Worthy of a play, for sure!

Love this! I remember asking him about this on his stream once. He wasn't interested at the time. I'm glad he decided to make it work all the way around. I own an actual Amiga so I will have to see if there is a way to pull it off and put it in the actual Amiga.

Yea - I don't mind it being RPi 4 only, as I've always ran it that way - but this year I used an external HDD and one of my ThinkPads. Worked a charm and is pretty nice that I could keep all of PiMiga 4 on that USB 3 HDD and just boot into it when I want.

It continues to grow year over year so its just a great way to experience a darn good Amiga collection. And it has that 'passthru' feature where you can pull forward current firefox/terminal/whatever - that makes it really 'useable' if you need to quickly do something beyond the Amiga capabilities...

Anyway, this ones worth it this year!!

I have installed this already on my Pi400 and it's been a little dissappointing...fortunately Mr. Edwards (via Discord) has been helping
me get it going....but it's a bit buggy overall in my experience. Still
the support has been good and hopefully it gets all worked out.

??? Are you using the version 4 release? I had zero issues - what did you run into?? You just have to copy a file called 'kick.rom' to the correct location and... boom.

I've installed this on my Pi400 (using a good SD card, the Extreme Pros from SanDisk are pretty good) and setted it up using the ROM file from Cloanto, and it runs almost smoothly!

Gotta say that I like how's easy to use, and how it's quite close to the AMIGA user experience!

With a USB to DB9 adapter, I reached to connect my QuickShot Maverick joystick, and it feels like playing on my real AMIGA 1200 :)

I guess there are some bugs that, thanks to the great community on the PiMiga server on Discord and the dedication of Chris, they can be solved.

Overall, I have to tell that I'm both glad of owning a Pi400 and to use PiMiga on it!

No bluetooth! so on my pi setup that means no sound.

Hmmmmm - I could have swore there WAS bluetooth. Some options, like having to turn on WiFi in the underlying debian Linux, need to be tweaked at times - especially if NOT installing on a Raspberry Pi.

For the wifi example, when PiMiga 4 boots up I have to press F12, exit the PiMiga 4/ArosOS/Amiberry which drops us into the Debian Linux... then I select WiFi and connect - then double click the PiMiga 4 icon to restart Amiberry/ArosOS/PiMiga 4.

In the same way, I wonder if you can click on bluetooth settings and get it turned on?? Also, check the readme files and documentation - I'm almost SURE bluetooth is in there.
