I don't get any new messages on my own BBS, but I check the fsxNet messages almost daily. All I get on my BBS is bots and losers trying log on as "system" or "root." About 100% of my traffic is people who trying to crash my board.

I think that's probably true for almost all of us -- at the very least anyone running on port 23.

In my case I have always run on port 23 and don't bother with the 'press escape twice' thingy either. Mystic will auto block the IPs of bad actors after a few attempts and so far (touch wood) things have been OK for the most part.

I do get regular callers to the BBS but I guess I'm a bit of an 'old timer' now? Dunno. I know I feel I'm an old timer at work now - sigh :)

I find it interesting that I've been running a public Mystic instance since October 2019, so a few months over three years.

And I'm imagining that that's longer than a very large portion of BBSs have ever been run.

Not really sure what point that the makes the BBS a bit of an "old timer", but not sure how long I expected it to wind up being.

And, having said that, I joined FSXnet at that time, too, and it wasn't "new", at the time.

The same as in the old days.

It has to do with community and the sysop's passion for BBSing.

Sysops that just let their board sit and don't actively get involved with it will find that most people just stop calling.

Today it's even worse. Back in dialup days, you were limited to the BBSs you could call in your local area (unless you really enjoyed those Long Distance charges). Today, I can "call" a BBS on the other side of the planet as
quickly and cheaply as the BBS down the street.

So you need to have a callable BBS not only for your area, but for the world.
