I'm not hearing temps to reach that low in my location (S. and
SE Ontario) ..just rain and then some snow in the mix while
negative temps remain in the single negative Celcius range, and
then some more rain.
But power outtages are very likely as connected paths are
vulnerable.

I am talking about temperatures as low as NEGATIVE FIFTY
DEGREES F.
I'm praying that we all stay safe. Prepare for power
outages. Got food for a week or two? Flashlights? An alternative
way to heat your home? How about a winter sleeping bag to crawl
into? I'm getting ready. Good luck to you all.
Its cold here in Texas. 11 degrees!
I am talking about temperatures as low as NEGATIVE FIFTY
DEGREES F.
Perhaps in a VERY few places, but that's an exception and not the norm.

It's a pretty big event. It's extremely cold here (compared to
what we are used to at this time of year). I'm surprised even
Texas is 11 degrees according to Nugax.
I don't know if you'll get it in Florida but it's a big cold
weather system.

Yep, it tends to do that in late December. In fact it's an annual repeating event.

Normal winter preps. Nothing all that unusual, calm down and you'll be OK.
Yes, it is indeed a widespread event. It just makes me laugh when I
watch the "news" and it sounds like the Apocolypse is here. I
mean...... it's winter. It's December. It just seems so over-hyped,
as if the media wants to create a story out of .... nothing. Gee, that
Yes, we are also feeling it here. Below freezing temps over the next
four nights, and daytime highs in the 30's. Unusual, yes.
World-ending, no.
My understanding is that temperatures are unusually colder than normal though. Hence what he said about "very severe winter storms".

The area wher I live tends to be fairly mild and we normally dont get much snow or freezing rain etc. and normally it doesnt stay freezing here very long. But yesterday and today were seeing temperatues in the low 20s throughout the whole day and we got a thin layer of snow and freezing rain overnight last night. Its unusually cold here right now.

Im not sure where the snark is coming from.. These are lower than normal temperatures in parts of the US.

I'm not sure anyone has been saying it's world-ending here. Just unusually cold weather.
However, I live in an area where we rarely get much snow, and it
rarely stays freezing very long. So, there are a lot of people
here who aren't really used to driving in snow & ice, and those
weather conditions tend to create a bit of chaos here.
It was -22 here this morning when I got up. It's -17 now
and the forcast says it'll be around -10 tomorrow. Chilly
for this time of year.

So far so good.. :)
Temps are dropping a bit now. Had quite a bit of snow on my
vehicle and around it. Managed to get through most of my 200m
driveway except at the end where it meets the road. Damn
township constructed a huge snow bank in front of my driveway
AND they plowed over my mailbox.
The power went out at 9:30a.
The power only came back at 7p.

Today in my section of the country it was - 30 with the wind
chill. That's unusually cold for this time of year, Winter or
not. Half of the country is experiencing temperatures below zero.
We used to get temperatures like this decades ago, but it hasn't
happend lately and many people are unprepared. Plus we have
thousands of people without power - over 230,000 in Maine,
120,000 in New Hampshire, 96,000 in New York, and so on.

Yeah, I grew up with temperatures like this too so I am used to
it. Many people aren't. I know people in Florida are whining
because the temperature is about + 54 degrees.
In my portion of Florida, it is 20 degrees (F) this morning, and the
high for the day is supposed to be in the mid-30's. Same for the next
few days.

It's xmas morning here in Canada, currently sitting at -9c w/ the wind chill feels like -12c.
New bucket list item: Spend xmas day in a warmer climate & ditch the turkey for some BBQ!

In reviewing my weather station data for the year, this morning's temp
was the lowest for the entire calendar year (and probably going back several years).
Here is Maryland this morning, it was 3 degrees (F). What is crazy is yesterday's high temp was 54 degrees (F) at 1am in the morning. A 51 degree drop in just barely over 24 hours.

Yes. Also, as global climate change continues, we will see
more intense and more frequent storms of this nature. That
itself is noteworthy, and in is driving some of the coverage
of this storm.
Then we should learn to exploit this and store the surplus water for distribution to the areas that do not have water.
