Yes, it is indeed a widespread event. It just makes me laugh when I
watch the "news" and it sounds like the Apocolypse is here. I
mean...... it's winter. It's December. It just seems so over-hyped,
as if the media wants to create a story out of .... nothing. Gee, that
is actually what most "news" is, after all.

I'm in MN we grew up with things like this. It can be scary for people who don't deal with this yearly. If you don't use your heater often make sure it's working good. If you have a in home fire place clean it, and have some good wood inside that is room temp and dry. Its easy to bring in more wood after its going well but it sucks to try to warm up and dry wood in the cold. :D

The upside you can use the outside to help fill up your ice cubes quickly. :D

The area wher I live tends to be fairly mild, and we normally don't get much snow or freezing rain etc., and normally it doesn't stay freezing here very long. But yesterday and today, we're seeing temperatues in the low 20s throughout the whole day, and we got a thin layer of snow and freezing rain overnight last night. It's unusually cold here right now.

I'm praying that we all stay safe. Prepare for power
outages. Got food for a week or two? Flashlights? An alternative

Normal winter preps. Nothing all that unusual, calm down and you'll be OK.

However, I live in an area where we rarely get much snow, and it rarely stays freezing very long. So, there are a lot of people here who aren't really used to driving in snow & ice, and those weather conditions tend to create a bit of chaos here.

Yes. Also, as global climate change continues, we will see
more intense and more frequent storms of this nature. That
itself is noteworthy, and in is driving some of the coverage

Yes, and "normal" is made up of the average of lows and highs. If
things weren't "lower than normal" sometimes, they would be exactly the
same, every day.

It's not meant to be too snarky. Perhaps it's just my mood from
watching the endless "news" talking heads rant and rave about how
terrible it is. It's just freaking winter. And yes.... I know about
winter, having grown up in New England, an hour from the Canadian
border.

Today in my section of the country it was - 30 with the wind chill. That's unusually cold for this time of year, Winter or not. Half of the country is experiencing temperatures below zero. We used to get temperatures like this decades ago, but it hasn't happend lately and many people are unprepared. Plus we have thousands of people without power - over 230,000 in Maine, 120,000 in New Hampshire, 96,000 in New York, and so on.

township constructed a huge snow bank in front of my driveway

Arriving home at 6p, I just parked at the end of driveway and
trekked to the house. More snow has been accumulating.

But power outtages are very likely as connected paths are
vulnerable.

I get that. Yes, it is unusual. Again, I think I'm just a little irked

In my portion of Florida, it is 20 degrees (F) this morning, and the
high for the day is supposed to be in the mid-30's. Same for the next
few days.

In reviewing my weather station data for the year, this morning's temp was the lowest for the entire calendar year (and probably going back several years).

Here is Maryland this morning, it was 3 degrees (F). What is crazy is yesterday's high temp was 54 degrees (F) at 1am in the morning. A 51 degree drop in just barely over 24 hours.

It was sausages, chicken nibbles, steak and some shrimps y/day... we gave about 2/3 of it to the kids to take home but there's a goodly amount left for the meal today.

I just went back and checked my weather station archives and on Christmas Day last year, it was 60F (15C) (which is really warm for that time of the year here in Maryland - USA).

Fast forward one year (this year) and it was 3F (-16C) degrees in the morning.

We are used to the weather here going from one extreme to the other, pretty rapidly.
