How do i get the NodeList Browser to work ?

At this point, I'm wondering how many of us came to FSXnet who _didn't_ use those videos.

Because, yeah, they helped me, too, when I had no clue where to start.

And I mostly hope that they're not _too_ outdated, so that they can remain useful for the main parts.

use those videos.

I didn't. I was working on Magicka at the time I joined, I had been on
WWIVnet and Mystic wasnt on my radar.

I imagine there's actually plenty of people that came without the videos,
that run synchronet or some other BBS system.

It might be closer how many people who use mystic came via the videos,
but then I suppose I'm not factoring in those who come, stay for a month
or two then shut down their BBS.

I didn't (and I didn't know about these videos). Setting up FSXNet is pretty much like setting up any other FTN network. Sometimes I still feel like I don't know what I'm doing sometimes, but I think I at least know the main items for getting set up with a FTN network.

I'm one of those people that joined without seeing the videos. I started writing my BBS earlier this year at first to just see if I could. I had no idea how any of the FTN stuff worked... or even really writing the local BBS itself. It started as a telnet server that kept expanding. lol

I saw fsxNet listed on a lot of BBS that I logged in on so I did a Google search. Digging through the site I saw that you connect to a hub over different protocols... one I saw was binkd.. I had no idea what that was either so went Googling again. I didn't get many results and the reference manual I found was in Russian so I had to Google translate that and save as a PDF before I got anywhere. There was also a helpful blogpost about Engima 1/2 and setting up binkd.

After testing with the test node, Deon helped me get set up on HUB 3 and then came the headscratching of trying to reverse engineer the FTN packets to see how they worked between the FTSC docs and other code on the web.

Long story short... it's been an adventure with a lot of digging and headscratching but things are all up and running! :)

I am a user on this BBS. I was using another GT POWER BBS and had seen lots of posts made from this one.
I believe the SYSOP closed down his BBS so I started dialing the number for Mikes BBS and joined it.
He either had added FIDO Net to his system when I joined , or did later.
Since then several other Networks were added here
Dovenet, iLink, TQW net there may be others I can't bring to mine right now.

So I only use one sign on to read posts from message areas in various Networks. Ed

Yeah, I suppose what I was thinking of was one subset of users, where they decided to start up a BBS, went with Mystic, then looked into how to do things with Mystic.

And all of this happening after Avon's videos would be the thing that pops up when you go looking.

But, while you're the first message I've read on this, I think there are six more waiting for me, and I'm going to take a wild guess that I was not thinking nearly broadly enough with my comment.

I think your BBSs would've predated FSXnet, even, which doubtlessly lowers the likelihood.

Though I was looking into this in 2018, I think, and I'm not sure when FSXnet got critical mass, though I'm sure it was before then.

There are a depressing amount of those examples.

Well, maybe it's not that depressing -- people try something, find it's not worth the effort, then move on to something else.

Reasonable enough.

Being a BBS sysop is certainly not the way to be popular online, these days.

I also did both (and stopped at two networks). I think I was determined to figure out Fidonet, regardless, because of remembering it from my childhood, and figuring it was a basic part of having a BBS.

That said, while Fidonet messages have been accumulating for a long time, I'm not sure if I've looked at any of them in years.

But I don't even get to all of the FSXnet messages, and wading into fight-o-net just seems exhausting.

When I was a teenager as well I use to dial into a local bbs or two that had Fidonet support.
If I remember correctly the bbs was called "Eye of the Storm"
The sysop was John Bloomstrom I believe.
In a nodelist I think I saw the old node number.
It was in West Palm Beach, FL.

That said, while Fidonet messages have been accumulating for a long
time, I'm not sure if I've looked at any of them in years.

Fidonet probably doesn't have the user base that it once had there are probably 30 or 40 really active users at this point that I know of.
Most have a love for older systems and about half os them use old hardware to run them in some way or another.
Others use vm's and some use Raspberry Pi computers.
I am relearning everything I once knew and even taking it forward now that I have the skill set to put things together properly.
