I can't believe mayonnaise as condiment never entered the fray... I suppose you can take the boy out of Europe but not Europe out of the boy... Next you'll tell me you'd rather have Pepsi than Kvas....
Mayonnaise is very common in the US, to use as a spread on sandwiches
and in some salads (such as tuna salad, egg salad, etc.). I don't
think mayonnaise is a European thing..
(Sorry. Dad's been gone for a decade now. He last fell ill this Friday. So I had to do a dad joke to remember him.)

In California, they raised the minimum wage for fast-food workers, and
the restaurants responded by raising prices up to 35% on items. You
could go to a diner and get a burger for about the same price. And
service. And coffee refills. and a clean table.

If a proper restaurant is the same price a fast food service, there
aren't many reasons to get fast food service :-P
I have noticed this in other areas, in which the price for the cheap version of something goes up until the difference with the expensive version is so low that you may as well get the expensive version.
Regarding food prices, it is getting so ridiculous that I switched to self-production for a lot of things last year. The
videogame/tabletop/RPG parties I organize with friends used to make use
of take-away food or home delivered food, but nowadays we just cook something in-site because the difference in price is so huge.

Unless you make minimum wage, which did go up, which is part of the
reason fast food costs more (probably enough more that those making minimum wage still cannot afford to eat it).

Cheap mexican beers are now as expensive as "craft" IPAs.
McDs offers a 30% discount, but that's still overpriced. When I worked
fast food I got burned out pretty fast on the fare. I'm imagining
employees bartering discounts with other local fast food places for a
change of pace.
I'm fairly certain minimum wage is still decided by the states. Here, minimum wage is still like $7.25 or something like that. It hasn't
gone up here (at least yet).
Down here in NZ/Australia, we'd call that a serious case of taking the^^^^

Yes, which is why fast food costs more in California than it does in
other states. Based on a recent cross-country journey I took, I can confirm the price difference. ;)

We have plenty of piss taking of our own going on. The major brewers
here have been popping out their cruddy generic beers in cans that mimic "craft beer" can offerings. In an effort to snaarf some of that
market. So you can pay more for a bog standard beveridge of dubious quality in a can that looks like a genuine crafty.

Fast food companies are reporting to their shareholders that they think their customers have taken just about as much shrinkflation, degradation of service and price gouging as they're going to take. McDonalds is planning on "slowing the rate of increase". Not halting, not lowering prices.
Not sure who they think they'll be selling to. If the news reports locally are correct McChucks are suffering from increasing costs with falling turnover. They're pricing themselves out of existance. Not selling enough o their Sh*t at inflated prices to cover the costs thereof.

It's worth researching the news regarding their ice cream machines. They're incredibly finicky, have a self-cleaning mode that when it
fails, requires 4 hours to reset, there's one company that services
them, they're locked down to prevent service, parts are horrendously expensive, and the company is currently suing a company that the franchises love that reverse engineers the maintenance interface so the franchisees can fix it themselves.
There's another law suit around a company that made a screen scraping
app that would map out which McD's machines are out of order by trying
to place an online order for a shake and reporting which are
unavailable.

Should I say housing crisis!
Income-wise it's probably about the same here, if not lower. But home prices are probably quite a bit less than that. Still outrageous
compared to say, 5 years ago. I would probably made almost double what
we paid for our house almost 20 years ago, but with the current prices
on new houses, we would be right back into the same kind of
mortgage/loan we've almost paid off over the years now.
*Now they are saying they want more money for A/C and to sign this form. My kid (who should have been a lawyer) has looked at everything she tore the letter up. If I sign or agree to anything it will modify my lease thus allowing the crooked managment company to make changes to our terms. I just told the super "Produce my lease that says I am NOT paying for A/C." He replied "You know the building has changed ownership and management a dozen times since you moved in." I said "I sure do. I
have a copy of my lease, but I won't produce it until managment does first. My lawyer doesn't want me doing your job for you." - That got them to go away for 2 years, now it's started back up already doing the above and so far haven't heard anything back. Of course we also pay our rent at least 2 weeks early every month just to make sure they don't get us with a banking error.
Yes, housing prices for us started to get silly in 2017. We purchased our home for 190k in 2013 and it now sells for 650.
In any sense, we are feeling like we are out growing our home and looking for something else in this crazy market.

Exactly. What we spend on food (and we stopped buying

That's an interesting data point - the ratio of home price to median income. When my parents bought their house in 1970, they paid $24,000. I'm pretty sure my dad was making about that much in a year.
