ok, so i have a raspberry pi built in to my hobby-car, a mazda rx-8, it displays stuff from the engin via an obd2 adapter. today i realised that i can install some other stuff on it, so i did install dosbox+some games, but now i can also check my favorite boards waiting for the read light turn green :)

That's cool. :)
A while ago, I bought a bluetooth OBD2 reader that can plug into the
OBD2 port and transmit data to your phone, and there are smartphone
apps that can read that and display your car's information.
However, and maybe it depends on the car, but I realized that the OBD2
port might be always getting power, even when the engine is off, which
can drain the car's battery faster. So, these days I tend to avoid
having something plugged into the OBD2 port all the time.

That's phenomenal!! A great combination of fun projects. And I'm
pretty sure any laws against text while driving don't apply to FTN messages! (note: I am not a lawyer and that is surely false
information) :)
You know it's Roon rolling down the street when you hear those modem connection tones booming from the subwoofer in the back.

Thats not useless.... I'd love to have that in my car, being able to
check a few message boards while stuck in traffic/otherwise waiting
would be great.
What setup have you got for input? I can't image you have a full
keyboard sitting around in your car? Or maybe you do....

hmm, now that's some nice idea! gotta download an mp3 :)
i should make a LED display to the back window which says CONNECT 28800/ARQ/LAPM/etc... when reaching over 200km/h :)
The "/ARQ/LAPM" part is what really sells this. Wonderful detail and I mus

Any car I've coded requires that the engine be on. It gets enough
power
at rest to light the display, but it won't read anything until the
engine is on.

If you're worried about battery drain, can I recommend replacing your interior lights with LED replacement bulbs? I do that with most of my cars, the lights are cheap, they throw out a lot more light, and more importantly to me, if you leave the dome light on, it won't kill the battery.

+1. Pretty sure the engine needed to be on for any car I have

What do you mean by "coded"?
