If you want to run a BBS on a C64 and are worried about real
hardware, run it on the Vice Emulator. I run 2 Image BBS' on Vice
setups, one is a full blown CMD HD/Ramlink/SCPU setup running at
20mhz and 38.4k modem speed, and the other is my 1993 Image 1.2 board
that is exactly the same as it was back on the day I took it offline.
That one is running on a Vice with Lt Kernal HD set up. I have the
real hard ware here if I wanted to run it but why destroy running a
40 year old computer 24/7 when you can pick up a off lease PC and
dedicate it to Vice and emulation... It's worth looking into..
The other question is, why would you tie up your retro hardware on a
BBS that nobody will call? I would want to use my stuff for playing
games and the like not just sitting there waiting for nobody :)
Of course, emulators are a bit of a cheat too, since it's not the "real
deal" and people may think they're calling a real C64 bit in fact it's
a modern PC with a bit of software. Pick your poison I guess.
