• My eyes

From Matthew Munson@21:4/108 to All on Sun Oct 4 19:56:26 2026
I think getting older and my over reliance on staring at screens is
doing crazy crap to my right eye. I noticed this during my holiday last
month. I am going to try and wear my glasses regularly and get an eye
doctor appointment as soon as I am able to.

Definitely get a doc appointment if it was some sudden vision change thing. Could be nothing like eye strain but could also be something more. Better to be safe than sorry!

I've recently been having to increase the fonts in my terminal, and now in Windows itself. Webpages are all zoomed in and the magnifer is on stand by. Aging sucks. Looks like it's reading glasses for me.

I heard a comedian talking about dating older guys and mentioning the
HUGE font on their phones. :)

I've worn glasses for some time, but I hated reading glasses. I needed
some astigmatism correction at distance, but not much. I've been
wearing progressives for about 30 years now. They're expensive, which
bites, but I don't have to worry about taking them off and on again to
    read.

I'm 60 and about due for another eye exam, thankfully my prescription
is mostly stable. Usually I end up scratching my lenses and that
prompts me to get an exam and new glasses every year or two. :)

You should get the scratch proof coating. If your prescription doesn't change it might be worth it.

Ever since I discovered microfiber cloths, I've been pretty lucky about
keeping glasses scratch-free. Using a mf cloth and ensuring the glasses
are wet before wiping them does the trick.

I have that on mine, but it's not scratch "proof", it's scratch resistant.

Lately I've been wondering if glasses might help me. I've always had pretty good eyesight and never needed to wear glasses, but in the last year or two, I sometimes have a harder time reading things in the evenings, though it feels like it's because of eye moisture rather than my eyes themselves.. But there have been times when I'll be reading a food package or something and the font just seems a bit too small for me to read. Sometimes I'll take a photo of it with my phone and then zoom in on the photo to read it.

Try the Magic-Eye 3D type exercises. They actually improve eyesight function. Then, when you get the hang of the technique you can do it without any images by just doing it using the "feel" that you learn from the 3D viewing.

I remember overhearing a vendor meet and greet in an elevator going up
to an office, people making small talk. One guy mentioned where he grew
up, and asked the other where he grew up.

He replied, "...I didn't grow up."

    Good answer!

I stopped being a phone/network guy when I was trying to hurriedly
punch down a jack in time for an all-hands meeting. It refused to come
up. With a few minutes to spare I hit it with my phone's flashlight and
realized I was punching the blue wire to the green punchdown.

Reminds me of when I was working for a hospital in Sheffield and a contractor cut through the phone cables. The fact they didn't have a disaster plan in place for an event like this is mind boggling, but that's another story. I went to look at the damage and then were a whole bunch of wires and I was thinking to myself, no way they going get those back together. Surprisingly they did. I guess it's not their first time.

    Hello Nightfox!

Try the Magic-Eye 3D type exercises. They actually improve eyesight..

I've never been able to see the 3D effect on those. I remember trying to see those around 1993 when they were new but was never able to.

I recently watched a teenager trying to "figure it out" with the encouragement of their parent. The parent said "cross your eyes". But technically, that's the opposite of what you want to do. Instead, I interjected and suggested that the whole idea is to achieve "parallax view" - meaning, to un-cross and relax your eyes. Hold the image in front of you but look into the distance as if you were to look far BEHIND the image. Then, let the brain "focus" on the image.

And THAT worked! It was fun to see the teenager witness the "magic" reveal based on the emerging smile and "Wow!".

The instructions on the Magic Eye pages is good too.
