• Checkking in & TQW?

From Nodoka Hanamura@21:1/101 to All on Sat Oct 3 15:28:13 2026
Hey all, been a hot bit since I checked in on you guys. Good to see there's still familiar faces around.

I wanted to ask, since I tried to on my end, but for some reason I can't dial in to TQW over telnet or SSH.

Anyone know if it's still up or maybe my IP got blacklisted? I know since I started selfhosting a lot of stuff I've been getting more Captchas, but as far as I know that's likely from my old flaresolverr instance that I don't have anymore.

Also, anyone know if you can change your name on Mystic BBSes? In the intervening time I cheanged my pseudonym to Naluri Murai.

The tqw network is still up and running. I see the domain has gone so
whether that means hubs are not talking to each other, I dunno. I
dropped Bill a message via QWK so we'll see if he answers, I guess.

I still see erb.pw up and running. What domain are you referring to?
Wasn't sure if there was a DNS domain connected to tqwnet...

That's too bad. Araknet had one hub go down and each of the other hubs
sort of limped along for a while. I'd almost prefer a less resilient
network, that, when it went down, you knew it. :(

I'm sort of feeling like that too. Though the problem with having a master hub that everything is routed through is you end up with a fractured network of little clusters. It's like the Sixth Sense. They are dead but they don't know they're dead :)

    Howdy,

Some of the people in Fido zone 2 are preaching the FidoWeb, basically having multiple feeds and letting message dupe detection sort things
out. That might work well for an othernet.

So here in FSX we are doing that at the hub level.

I send mail to hubs 1,2 & 5 directly, and receive mail from those hubs directly. (Not hub 4, since it lives next to hub 1).

It has its benefits, when 1 hub down it only take out that part of the network. However, when it's down unexpectantly it might not be so obvious immediately that its down...

Not really. Not every hub/system carries every group. Sometimes posts get dropped. I was having this problem with a couple of echos so I added a 2nd feed. I'm then also feeding someone else and they feed me also so that's three. Sorry, you'll have to deal with it.

IMHO, what makes it sloppy/lazy but necessary is that the "sloppy/lazy" is probably not happening on your system but somewhere else in the chain -- an autopilot system for example. It might be lazier, or more unnecessary, than changing a feed every time you realize that (an) active echo(es) have suddenly stopped flowing but it works so long as you are using a modern tosser.

OTOH, there are networks that do not permit this practice and you need to respect that. But for FIDO, where in recent past we've had RCs just up and disappear, it it almost necessary if you are a local hub.
