They allow me to use the devices as a hobby
instead of building and maintaining them as a
hobby.
I grok that. I've been building since the late '80s, and I've enjoyed doing it. But now, it's kinda lost it's appeal, probably 'cause I'm older and don't have as much patience. In fact, my current box is an Intel NUC I bought about 7-8 years ago; it's showing it's age, too. Thing is, I have a pile of new components sitting in the next room, that I bought about 10 years ago, just waiting to be assembled. I just never felt like building the damn thing, but I really need to, this NUC is almost on life support.
As for maintenance, whether you build it or buy it, it still needs to be looked after occationally, both in terms of software and hardware. What are you gonna do when it starts slowing down or a component dies? Pitch it...sell it? That would be such a waste. Most common issues can be easily solved with a little time and effort.
