Mystic is alright, but I don't know why they are ahead on this. The real poll is how many people run the software.

Twice as many people run Synchronet, and it has way more features. I think maybe the default menus on Mystic are prettier and certain things are a little easier to setup, but Synchronet is way more powerful.

I'm not going to go flame the Mystic people, but I don't get it :) ---------------------------------------------------------

there's a lot of mystic bbses. i'm not sure we could get a good figure of who runs what. not many people participate in polls or want to.

i dont know why people run mystic. i guess they are told there's no other option and the author says it is a spiritual sucessor to rg and telegard. i loved rg and telegard and i don't find it as such.

i think people should check out elebbs or just run an older dos bbs software, but if they like running it, that's good.

i haven't heard people say they like running mystic, though. i just think they stick with it because it's not like synchronet because they find it scarey due to the .js.

Since I used RA in the 90s, I was setting up a BBS with EleBBS before I started using Synchronet. But EleBBS wasn't exiting with an errorlevel to run events like I was expecting (that's how RA did its events). I thought it was a bug and decided to look for other BBS software and found Synchronet. I don't know if EleBBS is still actively maintained, but I haven't heard much about it, and I haven't heard of anyone on the message networks posting from a BBS running EleBBS.

pcmike hosts the site. no it's not being 'updated' every year but it works just fine. i have a person who i host for that uses elebbs.

So, I'm wrong it's not double but still close to 50% more...that's not insignificant.

I never ran Telegard but as far as Renegade I don't think it's the "spiritual successor" to rg either.

There are "bridge" programs out there that will give you telnet and stuff to the DOS BBS software. There are people who do it and there are times I think it's tempting, but you'd still lose a ton of stuff compared to Synchronet.

I don't think Mystic is bad at all and if they like it good for them, I just don't see how even if you ran it why you would think it's "the best". I can drive a Chevy and like it just fine without claiming it's "the best car".

if there ARE more more synchronet bbses, these might be a holdout from the old days when someone would just install a synchronet bbs and let it rot. back then there was a huge amount of synchronet systems.

well older bbs softwares had the same kind of stuff for the users, and some of them had scripting languages.

i use synchronet to launch the older bbses. the elebbs i host for a friend has the telnet server on another port and then it launches via synchronet.

you can also use net2bbs.

it all depends on what you want.
like would i, myself lose a lot switching? probably not. most of my mods could be converted to another scripting language and i dont use synchronet's other servers other than bbs and email.

Dragon probably has an accurate answer to that with the IPTIA database- a cursory look at the Synchronet BBS list shows 20+ new ones since the beggining of the year - the vast majority of those on the list are 3.18 or higher. If they were setup and letting them rot, I'd expect them not to keep up with the latest version.

Reguardless, good for their little poll, I just don't agree with it objectively :)

Well, I go for Synchronet of course but Mystic has some interesting aspects. It has only 1 unfortunate aspect and I *think* it's a documentation flaw vice a real one. I has a disturbing trend of marking netmail as 'Crash/Direct' then routing it through uplink (even othernet stuff where I don't have that network).

I recall sending routing file examples to a few of them which often fixed it but next time, they'd forget and route it again (grin). If I can, I send it along 'crash' for them.
