So I've racked my brain on this for a few hours now, so until I go further here I am. Trying to relay SMTP through my gmail account. Created an app specific password and here's what I have in sbbs.ini for email specific to smtp:
TLSSubmissionPort = 465
SMTPPort = 25
RelayServer = smtp.gmail.com
RelayPort 587
RelayUsername = ****@gmail.com
RelayPassword = **********
Options = ALLOW_POP3 | USE_SUBMISSION_PORT | TLS_SUBMISSION | TLS_POP3 | RELAY_TX

In the logs it's giving a 530 "5.7.0" error which per Google is "Must issue a STARTTLS command first". I've read that Sync does support STARTTLS, but what am I missing? Thanks --

Yes, Synchronet will issue a STARTTLS command when sending via SMTP.

You do appear to be lacking any of the RELAY_AUTH options, so that your mail won't be authenticating you with the server and that seems like a likely problem.

Yeah I was missing that, thanks .. Added and mail is relaying through my Gmail account now, but every message has my GMail as From instead of the BBS EMail Address. I'm not sure if this is on the Sync side or Gmail side, so that's my next thing to figure out... but at least it's going out now.

I think I found my answer, found an article saying Google uses the main email account unless it's using Google Workspace. I do have a legacy Workspace account which I'm dropping soon since they're dropping the free version in a few months... so guess I'll try the Spectrum SMTP server next.

You might also give Sendgrid a try, I've been pretty happy with them,
the free tier is probably good enough for most small BBS use. I'm using
the paid tier though, since I'm also relaying my regular mail server's outbound mail through them too.
