    Waiting-For-Call [Screen] It's the menu that shows on the screen while the node is waiting for a call (sometimes the menu might be turned off if the sysop's account is set to expert menu mode)

    This is one thing I have to know. When I have expert mode on (I really can't stand with out it on) Why dosn't it show the WFC. I dwonloaded a cool WFC from Ozone. Only problem was that I didn't know what node it was... 1 2 3 4 or 5
    So I added Node @NODE@
    Seems to be fine now. But I have to hit "?"....

    I just edited WFC.ANS... I already had an ANSI logo for my BBS (I think it was made by a .PCX->ANSI converter that converted a screenshot of my BBS' name typed in large letters in a special font [Robotech TrueType] in MSPaint or something like that =) Of course, I cleaned it up in an ANSI editor and added frills and such ;) In fact, the WFC logo looks better than the welcome screen on the BBS (actually it's the first logon screen, since I use welcome.asc/ans for the randomized big intro ANSIs my BBS is notorious for =)

    That had me stumped for the longest time! I didn't know what the problem was until I posted on the chat board... It's okay though because I don't notice the non-WFC menus when I'm logged on locally anyways because it's fast (it's just when I'm logged on from my 486DX-33 with the 14400 internal Rockwell w/no error correction that it becomes a bother =)

    Ozone. Only problem was that I didn't know what node it was... 1 2 3 4 or 5 So I added Node @NODE@
    Seems to be fine now. But I have to hit "?"....

    Just turn the expert mode off like you said, unless it annoys you to see the menus when you're logged on...

    Figured so.... I guess the only way to edit it would be to decompile SBBS into ASM and play with it.... But as I don't know ASM.....

    ACTUALLY, I think it shows that statistics screen if you set it to... I know because I had it that way for the longest time until I figured out how to do my own WFC menu =)

    What are those other SBBS files list the "XSDK" external that comes with SBBS and the seperate one called "SBBSDEFS.ZIP?" (Not to mention all those other things packed in the \SBBS\EXEC\ directory with the archive...)

    You mean that not everything is available that anyone needs to tinker with it?

    I looked at it, _being_ a programmer (a C programmer, no less!), but sti no idea where to start with it! It's compilcated. It's 16-bit. It uses c libraries that aren't included (at least not in source form, which means porting to other compilers is next to impossible unless you know exactly those libraries do and can thus write replacements)

    Yes, in 16-bit .OBJ format, IIRC. It would have been much better to release the source to those libraries so that porting to 32-bit compilers would be easier (or maybe "possible" would be a better word)

    I realize this is an old message, but felt compelled to respond.

    o The released source code is not 16-bit only: The OS/2 and Win32 versions (both 32-bit) were compiled from the same code.

    o The only included library that didn't come with source (because I don't have it) rciol.obj, was for the DOS version only. I wrote a native OS/2 and Win32 version of this same library in C and included the source code for it (riolib.c). You could still build the DOS version and modify it to your hearts content without the source to rciol.obj. And if you wanted to know how the API worked, you have the C version (in riolib.c) to reference. rciol.obj was written in assembler and was not written for any specific "compiler". You just link it with your C obj files (compiled with any 16-bit x86 C compiler) and it would work. If you wanted to port the code to Linux or some other non-x86 platform, you would more likely start with the riolib.c source code as a reference. So I'm not sure what this talk of "custom libraries" was all about.

    Again, I realize this is an old message, but I feel compelled to clarify the matter:

    The 16-bit OBJ file that was included without source was for the DOS version
    of SBBS.EXE only. The C source code for a 32-bit version of this same library is included in the source (riolib.c) and was used to build the OS/2 and Win32 versions of SBBS. A port to a 32-bit compiler was more than "possible", it was already done for you (the released source code compiled successfully with Borland C++ for OS/2 and Borland C++ for Win32).

    Porting to a non-Borland compiler was also very "possible" (without any additional source code), as I, myself, recently ported the code to Microsoft Visual C++ (32-bit) without much effort. The code I ported I got from SBBS_SRC.ZIP (just like anyone else could have).

    Anyways, congratulations on the native Win32 port of SBBS! If I ever get a DSL or cable connection to the Internet, I might revive Mars Base again (or maybe it will be called Reflex Point BBS, since my parents' box [that MB ran on] was named "Mars Base" by me, and the PII-450 I have now I call ReflexPoint =)

    I can't believe there are still posts from me here in the Dove subs... Looks like I didn't do much Dove after 1998, although my BBS was up until July '99.

    Ok I'm going to ramble now (as I have always been famous for) because I thought someone might be interested to know that there's an entire computer lab at the U of W whose NT boxes are named after characters from Red Dwarf =)

    I've only released the source code once (in '97) and yes, riolib.c was part of that release (in the directory SBBS\RIO). riolib.c is a 32-bit Win32/OS2 replacement for the 16-bit riocl.obj communications library.

    Anyways, congratulations on the native Win32 port of SBBS!
