I've noticed an increase in bot activity in the last few weeks.

In sbbs.ini, in the [BBS] section, there's the setting MaxConcurrentConnections, which lets you limit the number of concurrent connections from the same client. I used to have that set to 8, and I reduced it to 2.

Also, in recent versions of Synchronet (3.20 and 3.21), there are some settings for maximum amount of time for inactivity, such as MaxLoginInactivity and MaxDumbTermInactivity, that you can set so that inactive clients get disconnected after an amount of time.

This page on the wiki describes some techniques you can use to limit this activity from clients & bots:

    they're not looking for BBSes

they're looking for misconfigured *nix servers, commercial or industrial equipment, etc

they immediately start trying to log in with default user information and then from there start in on the most common password lists..

    admin / password
    admin / admin
    system / manager
    cisco / cisco

    etc.

it's actually relatively common to run a "honeypot" to capture these types of connections and waste their time either by forcing a real person to investigate or waste the bot's time if they're smart and rate limit. the honeypot just pretends to be a misconfigured machine the bot is familiar with.

Personally from hosting many other things, those bots are usually scanner bots and they look for vulnerabilities to get into and take over your system. Best way to get rid of them is to just keep adding more lines to ip/eb/whatnot tables. On the other hand if they are actually joining your server then they are probably botnet type of bots that usually try to get on irc and set up a central command center by someone. Should look closely into it and choke them out. Back in the day none of these scanners existed and you'd know when somebody was war dialing in from the noise. Miss those times really.. Anyways that's all I have for now. G'day.

Sometimes there's more than one person using a single public IP address. Also, it's possible to connect and not authenticate, disconnect (or get disconnected) and the BBS side doesn't immediately realize that, so you're second connection is a "concurrent unauthenticated connection".

Sure, that's definitely possible. However, it's hard enough to get one person from one IP address to connect these days. So that's probably not going to happen.
Even in your use case, you're only allowing two people to connect from one IP address. What happens if there was ever more than that? I guess I was just seeing if there was a more technical reason to allow more than one concurrent connection via telnet, but there doesn't seem to be.

I suppose it could be useful from a sysop perspective if one were to need that kind of functionality. Then again, if I /did/ need to do something like that, I can just change my settings for that use case. Most of the time, and since bots are the ones trying to take advantage of multiple connections at the same time, I just limit it as much as possible.

at least for WWW, firefox (according to docs, it looks like the setting itself has been nuked from about:config) will open up to 9 simultaneous connections to a server. others browsers range from 6 to 12. the post i

Which I don't mind allowing that many via http/https, or usually even ftp. I'm not sure I've ever seen all allowed connections via those methods plugged up at once, like I have telnet or ssh - where you're only allowing around 5-10 actual nodes to be used at a time.

The first one seems unlikely these days with such a small amount of users, but I suppose it could happen. However, I do believe I've witnessed the BBS side not immediately realizing there was a disconnect, although it's usually not very long at all, where a third or fourth attempt is usually successful.

Appreciate the feedback from everyone, I think I'll give "2" a shot for a bit and see if it helps (or hinders) anything. I imagine I probably won't notice anything different, except that the bots will be able to connect twice instead of once before they're booted. ;)

If you want to have a little fun with the bots, put a bunch of text in
your badip.can, in my badip I have text about virus's from the early
    90's.

    Care to post it here?

I posted it was from the early 90's, actually it's from the early 2000's

It's possible that multiple people living in the same house could want to
use your BBS. To your BBS, they'd all appear to be coming from the same
    IP address.

That's a very improbable, unlikely scenario.

I've seen multiple users on my BBS say they heard about my BBS from their roommate or a relative they live with (and Synchronet says they have the same IP address). While it's possible they could be lying, I've seen this multiple times, and I feel like happens more often than "very improbable".

Sure, that's definitely possible. However, it's hard enough to get one person from one IP address to connect these days. So that's probably not going to happen.

I've seen multiple cases on my BBS where a couple of users have the same IP address, and one user said he heard about my BBS from a roommate or relative they live with. I suppose it's possible they could be lying, but I've never seen them do any harm. I'd say it definitly could happen.

Or they're creating multiple accounts to attempt to cheat in door games you don't play. ;)

Either way, I've upped the setting to 2 for the time being. If it doesn't cause any other issues (besides two bots of the same IP sitting around for the one minute duration I believe is set by default, instead of one), I'll leave it.
