Just curious how people backup their boards

I have a nightly timed event that uses 'rsync' to back up my home
directory and /sbbs to both a local server and a cloud server.

Seriously, backups can be done in the cloud, or on an external
drive. I'm not sure if tape drives are used anymore.

Tape drives- not so much, lol. I'm thinking a cron that zips the whole thing up and then scp's it to another server somewhere (maybe s3?). And it would also delete old backups after x amount of time.

tapes drive users are weird in the bbs community. they brag about having them, but they dont use them. i'm not sure if there's street cred to using tape backup drives or what.

I use free software called burp.
It's saved my ass many times, and I usually donate when I have to do a
restore as a thank you, and a reminder that we shouldn't take our data
for granted.
The server runs on Linux and there are clients for Linux, Windows, and
Mac. It's in constant development. I have a cheap storage only VPS (you
can find them on lowendbox.com) which allows me to also backup critical
files from other places.
burp allows you to exclude files/directories on the client or server
end config to by putting a dot-file in directories you don't want
backing up. it can run pre and post backup scripts and email on failure
and success if you like. It can create backup windows for clients so
they can only backup between certain hours on given days... also has deduplication techniques to keep backup size smaller.

dude, i would not backup any critical files to any server provider you find on lowendbox. those guys are usually fly by night operations.
or worse case, criminals who want to rip you off.

I don't have it on a timer currently, usually when I think about it
(about once a month) or before I make changes/update. The next
Synchronet release will probably have to put in a bit more work, and
maybe a bit of cleanup after the data migration.

Will also probably test this out a bit for the bbs-io synchronet docker generation... manually yanking out 3.2 to make sure the transition works
if necessary, since some of the tests may need to check/change.

S3 is a little overpriced for what it is. I would suggest Cloudflare's
R2 (compatible with S3 software, s3fs, cloudberry, etc). It's a bit
less expensive on storage fees, and they don't charge for data egress.
There's also DigitalOcean's storage (also S3 compatible) or backblaze as
other alternatives.

Hyper V backup ( still using windows for both os and sbbs )
then windows backup for day to day backup
