Afternoon Y'all. Just checking to make sure I'm getting out.
It's been a while since I had to take down the board to focus
more on the family stuff. But I think that was back in the v3.13
time range. I know I have a backup of the old bbs somewhere
around here (hehe). But now, I have way more time on my hands as
my kids are older. (They're now 20 and 14)
I swear getting back into the swing of things is rough, but I am
slowly getting there. But this time, I'm running the board on a
HP T610 thin client with upgraded memory (8Gig) and better SSD
drive, that's mounted on the side of my desk. So at least this
time, it's a dedicated setup.

I hope everyone is doing well and ttyl!
I see you... welcome back! I've got a 3 year old at home, not always easy to find time ;-)
I decided to skip running my own hardware, I use Digital Ocean's lowest tier server -- plenty of space and power for a board and they image the machine nightly, all for about $6/mo -- our electric rates are close to $0.30/kWh so any machine using more than ~30W would actually cost me more to host at home... old hardware is fun, but it sure isn't cheap to run sometimes!
That's nice! I was also thinking of a thin client but settled for an Intel NUC. Tried a fanless Shuttle PC before that, but it got *very* hot (to the point of the SSD reporting errors to the error log, despite the temperature actually being within operating limits)...
The HP thin client has done well for me. It started out as the arcade cabi chine until I upgraded it. But I'm not going to complain, it was $40 USD o
and I had the upgrade parts already. So now my arcade cabinet has an i3 a
core, which is perfect to run all the retro stuff and some newer things t

I really love the NUCs. They do have a fan, but the fan doesn't
come on unless it's under load. Then sometimes it can get a
little loud. For the most part though, it sits quiet.

I think all of them have fans, mine (a NUC7i3BNK) has one of
these: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07YRTW8RL
Very quiet, and has been running 24/7 for 4 years now -- no
replacement needed yet, but I have one on the shelf just in case.
:)
The only downside is that you have to take apart the entire NUC
to get to the CPU fan (or the CMOS Setup/BIOS battery)... Which
includes disconnecting/reconnecting those miniature Wi-Fi antenna connectors etc.

At a previous job I had, we had bought a bunch of NUCs for our
automated build & test system for our team's software. We had
those NUCs connected to a Jenkins build server, which would make
nightly builds and run automated tests using the NUCs. They
worked fairly well.
Okay that's great info, appreciate your reply!
Welcome back!

Thanks!
By the way, I did find that backup... it was from 2004. It was the Time Machine BBS back then. This time, I named it after my first BBS back in 1995-96,

Hmmmmm..... The computer's firewall seem fine, but I'll check my router.
Thanks for letting me know!

NUC is a pretty wide range at this point... there are some lower
power fanless options, there are also larger options that go to a
current I9 and support higher end RTX graphics cards.
I've been relatively fond of a few of the MinusForum products...
mostly they're laptop designs in a small desktop form factor.
Which is what the NUCs are as well.
I've started using some of the small/light Intel based boxes
(aliexpress) for projects since the costs for the Raspberry Pi
went through the roof.. for a full system, it's not that much
more than RPi but quite a bit better performing. Kind of wonder
if the RiscV options will come to lower end as well.

That's cool... I've got a MinisForum HX90 running most of my home
stuff currently, a bit overkill really, but nice overall... idle
is really low power.

Wow, hadn't previously heard of this MinisForum brand. Seem to
be well-reviewed and widely available (Amazon). The UM350 model
I see there may be what I'm looking for... Thanks.

I literally laughed out loud at this one... I tend to be a bit
like that too sometimes. The 3550H in that should be relatively
good... similar performance to a 4-8th gen i5.

Yes, it seems very fast, it's quiet, it's small. Came with Windows 10
and offered to update to Win 11, so I did that just out of curiosity. I
must say that if I was a Windows user, I'd prefer the version 11.
Pretty slick looking to be honest. But anyway, shortly after that it
was wiped and now has MX Linux on it. :-)
I had a $100 Amazon gift card burning a hole in my pocket, so in the end
it only cost me $229 (Amazon had a $50 coupon active for it too). That
gets me a Ryzen 5, 16GB DDR4 RAM, a 512GB NVMe drive, 4 USB 3.x jacks, a USB-C jack, HDMI and DP video ports, and a 2.5GB (?) ethernet jack.
Also has a space to add a 2.5" HD/SSD, so I added a 480GB SSD that I had around. Pretty nice little computer.
