My new Crucial MX500 1TB 3D NAND SDD 2.5" drive should arrive
by Thursday.

In the past, I have generally either cloned a same-size hdd to
another hdd or used images.

But what is the procedure y'all would recommend for cloning an
HDD that has two partions (C and H) to a larger SSD?

The original system is XP.

I'm reading that perhaps Macrium Reflect 8 could do it.

Another product called AOMEI claims to do the same, but
expanding a partition requires a pay version of the program.
But it sounds to be the easiest to use.

But there are caveats in both wrt to "bootable" partitions.

What experiences have y'all had doing this? And what tools
have you used for cloning an XP OS?

I'm somewhat familiar with some linux rescue disk software that
I could probably use for prepping the destination SSD prior to
the cloning. But I would rather like to stick to one tool that
can do all necessary steps.

I recently cloned my Windows 11 boot SSD to a larger one. I used Macrium Reflect 8 and it did the job perfectly, so I can certainly recommend it.

It doesn't extend the partitions in the process... but you can resize after the cloning to take advantage of the larger space.

HOWEVER, I ran into a gotcha here... as the way the partitions were originally structured meant that the C: partition was blocked from being extended, due to other partitions being in the way...

I used GNU Parted (which you can boot from on USB) to do the final piece of the puzzle: Moving partitions around to make best use of space, and then growing. This also worked first time with no issues.

The only problem I had is any games installed using Xbox Live: These did not survive the process due to the STUPID way that Windows references these games (via a unique drive identifier, instead of C:, D: etc)... so Windows could no longer find them despite the files all being on the disk still! A re-install of the games fixed this, so just annoying in the end.

I've used Macrium Reflect in the past, and it seemed to work fairly well. I've also used CloneZilla (an open-source tool based on Linux), which tends to be what I use more often these days.

That's the plan, to resize AFTER.

I figure that I will clone each partition separately.

[1] Clone C (mbr, boot)
[2] Resize C
[3] Clone H
[4] Resize H

I'm not completely sure. Here's how a game's desktop shortcut looks:

Microsoft.MinecraftUWP_8wek3894!App

So a lot different to the drive letter approach I am used to!

To be clear, it was only Xbox Live games that were 'lost' after the cloning. All other games worked just as before.
