Earlier, I was trying to download a file from archives.thebbs.org, and while their site is still up, and FTP site is still running, it seems their FTP site is empty. I was able to log into their FTP site (using a FTP program, since web browsers no longer support FTP), and I was able to log in (using "anonymous" for the username and an email address for the password), but when I do a ls, no files are listed. It seems their FTP site is empty.

Does anyone know if there is a mirror or backup of archives.thebbs.org available?

eh?? I don't know what you mean. Any FTP program I've ever used has had a place to put in a username and password. Also, when using a command-line FTP client, you could give username:password@address to provide a username and password for the FTP site.

place to put in a username and password. Also, when using a command-line FTP client, you could give username:password@address to provide a username and password for the FTP site.

I can't recall what he has running back there, but this is how it works:
+ that one time you click you are authorized to download that one file.
+ it is throttled to a low speed.
+ you are limited by how many downloads you can do.
+ ftp clients will not work.

so you should get an older portable version of opera or something and
get the files that way.

the guy that ran darktech.org was allowed to download all the files.
they created a site with everything pcmike had and they redid their site said they were THE bbs site to get files. and they did not give credit where credit was due.

he used to let everyone download all his files years ago. he let me do it in 2000 but i lost it all. most of his file library was downloaded by himself on dialup, calling long distance. he had to work to build it.

so if you have some problem, just email him. he doesn't follow bbs msg networks or stupid reddit.

so i got an older version of firefox portable and now i see his backend
is not serving the files.

I emailed him earlier. He said he thought he had actually disabled FTP altogether on archives.thebbs.org. He also said he hasn't had much time to work on it.

he did disable the ftp server long ago.

i dont think you understand.
he has something setup that serves the files once you click it. it monitors how much you download and limits the speed.

it may look to you like just a link to a ftp server but it is not.

AFAIK, there aren't mirrors, beyond that the dowloads are throttled, so
best to have a queue downloader that does one at a time.

Have thought about creating an archive and putting on my DO file
storage. I can't imagine the downloads would be too bad with a file for
bots to completely ignore is added.

i talked to pcmike and he said nothing is wrong.
i've been using it for decades and the behavior changed for me.
you have to type in anonymous and then a valid email to download now.
before i would just click

on reddit someone posted a 2017 'mirror' of the bbs archives.
it appears that they used a script to try to grab the files.
after comparing for a few minutes, i see that this is not a complete archive.

then i did some further digging and i see THIS archive and an older one on archive.org. it appears someone got the files from jack phlash[he mentioned someone gave him files years ago] and combined it with files from some mirroring effort.

you see it's mostly the same stuff but directories are renamed.
anyways, this is not a legit bbs archives mirror. yes, it's files but we all have bbs files. it's nothing special and it's only like 1.7, 1.8gigs.

people are better off getting a simtelnet archive and nightowl, etc collection form cd.textfiles.com
