As I attempt to make an honest to myself rank list, I find dsome of the descriptions I use have probably morphed or have become outdate. For
example, what used to be called college rock or alternativive rock probably doesn't make sense to kids currently in college, and groups such as REM
brought alt rock into the mainstream. Even with metal I have a problem,
since bands like Judas Priest and Iron Maiden are in no means the same
category as Cannibal Corpse, Dieicide, or Sepultura.

I like Pantera, however the local radio station plays loads of bands that
sound like Pantera was a major influence, yet miss the energy of the music
that influenced them.

Thats why when people ask what music I like, I rattle off bands and artists, because if I say "Metal", they think I like all these other bands that I don't like. I can listen to something like Cattle Decapitation's new album, "Death Atlas" and really enjoy it, but there is other death metal which to me is just noise. It's like there is this magic quality in music, where if it is there, I'll like it, regardless of what it is, and if not, it wont interest me. Probably something to do with the musicianship and the quality of the artist. For example, Devin Townsend had created music accross many genres, and it is all great, not because of the genre, but because he infuses something which makes both his extreme metal and haunted country style music enjoyable.


I can however confidently state that I don't like R'n'B and Hip Hop

Nostalgic value has it's merits. There's some songs I hear and refer to as Su mmer Songs because they remind of summer vacations growing up. My family
never went anywhere and we raised animals and grew crops, however there were always times where relatives from outside our area would visit, or my parents would drop me and some friends off at the theater to catch whatever the big movie was.

Well, some metal musicians are apparently classically trained, and there are some similarities. Have a listen to metal covers of classical music, and not only does it often work, it sounds like it could have originally been a metal song in the first place. But I note it doesn't always work the other way around. Some metal artists work well in classical style, others not. Metallica is one example (in particular, their earlier work), which seems more heavily influenced by Western classical traditions of music.

Many songs, or albums, are forever linked in my mind with particular, or some very specific times. There are many that when I listen to them, it often invokes a memory of a particular place and time where I heard it, and of that specific time. It can help take me back to that state of mind.

DTP is certainly a reach.

Tough call. If including SYL, I would say Alien definately, partly for the musical qualities, and partly for the particular time of my life that record entered, and the memories associated with it. Closely behind it, maybe Ocean Machine or Empath, though it is hard for me to rank them, as each is a unique listening experience. A song or album for every occasion. I still rate "The Death of Music" as a clear personal favourite.
