Thanks! Actually, I have not gotten real serious yet. I live in a town
that does not have any major-network TV stations of its own. Before
everything went digital, it was pretty easy to get most all of the major network TV stations from two nearby towns... one about 45-50 miles to the
West, and the other about 35 miles to the Southeast... with amplified
rabbit ears. Sometimes, I would even get a station or two from a third town
a little further away.

Once they went digital, I lost some of them while others don't come in so reliably. However, we get them all (minus their digital sub-channels) on cable. But lately the stations have been playing games with the cable
company, so we may lose some of them. I am preparing for that eventuality.

I have read some good things about an RCA outdoor/attic antenna that
apparently does not require a "directional motor" (one less thing to break). Are there any that you've taken a liking to?

Are you referring to one of those disc-shaped omnidirectional antennas? I managed to snag one of those from a Radio Shack on clearance for about $5 (marked down from almost $80--score!). It was missing the power amplifier
and the mounting hardware, but lucky for me I was able to rig something up
with parts on hand.

I live in a well-populated place (Hampton Roads, VA) and I manage to receive everything in the viewing area. The VHF stations were unreliable in the
summer but strangely enough have started coming in strong again. Go figure.

Most of the leave are off the trees now.. Leaves attenuate the signal big-
time especially when they are wet.

I live about 45 miles from the closest large city and I get great reception using the old antenna that was been here for years. I live up on a hill out in the county and that helps a lot. Too bad that their is a bigger hill to the north of me.. it hampers the signal from the city to the north. But it really doesn't matter because the channels in both cities carry the same networks. I can get FX, NBC, ABC, and CBS plus severl PBS station.. But I don't watch much TV; I think that contemporary programming sux buffalo
dung... Although, I do have a nice collection of older shows on my XBMC

I can't say I'm a big fan of those shows either, but it is definitely handy having access to the local news. When there's not much else to watch, the stuff on PBS starts looking pretty good.

There are a few stations which can't be accessed by any other way except
with an antenna. One low power station is an RTV affiliate, which has a lot
of older 50s-80s TV shows. Most of the bigger stations have subchannels
which I'm not sure are also on cable. Some have music videos, retro TV
shows, lifestyle/fitness shows, etc.

I'll admit there are times I miss cable, though. There was usually
something interesting on The History Channel, and I really loved watching episodes of Man v. Food. In fact, when I head back up to the parents' house next week I'll be catching up on those episode I conveniently scheduled on their DVR. :)

Yeah, I really liked RTV too.. I found myself watching reruns of Adman 12
and Emergency in the afternoons! However, the local station dumped RTV and put some worthless sports station it's place. Since I would rather watch
CSI than basketball..that channel got removed from the lineup.. I emailed
them and told them so too, but this is Redneck Central and the good ol' boys like watching sports.. Nothing against Rednecks; I'm a Redneck too...but
I'm a Liberal Redneck!

Another thing that I like is that two of the DTV stations have their own Weather Channels... one of which happens to play classic rock as thier backgound music!

One can't help but think he overplays the danger involved. I'd hate to be
his cameraman though. But you just know, the cameraman's carrying fresh
salad sandaches, a flask of whiskey, chocolate bars, boiled egg and canned truffles.
